Panel Discussion: A Collaborative Approach to Protecting Human and Animal Health

On November 17, 2010, the Animal Health Institute hosted a panel discussion about disease prevention at the nexus of animal and human health. The event highlighted the importance of animal health in protecting public health – with a key focus on the impact of pets, livestock, and wildlife – and addressed ways government agencies and the public and animal health communities are working to prevent zoonotic disease.

Cindy Smith, administrator of the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), delivered the keynote address, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Julian Pecquet, healthcare policy reporter at The Hill newspaper. The panel featured zoonosis experts representing the areas of wildlife, pets and livestock who discussed how they are working with other agencies to prevent possible future pandemics, including:

• Dr. Nina Marano, Branch Chief, Quarantine and Border Health Services Branch, Division of Global Migration and Quarantine, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

• Dr. John Albers, President, Albers Veterinary Strategies; Former Executive Director, American Animal Hospital Association

• Beth Johnson, Principal, Food Directions, LLC
